I recently got my car, ready for the road and everything. Reasonable insurance is hard to find. How do new owners find their insurance. Any help would be appreciated.
I got lucky and they insured mine under a american version pulsar/nx2000 Cheapest car I have ever insured.
Go with a broker which deals with a hand full of insurance companies. Let them figure it out for you. Don't say it's right hand drive or anything like that. Just give them the vin, say what it is, and say it's a japanese car. Also, mine is insured for a value, rather than what the car is I think.
I am with The Personal and they insured my Pulsar no problem, but only basic coverage no collision. If i want collision I would have to get my car appraised. I only pay about $100/month. I was with them before with my other cars, so I don't know how hard it would be to insure a Pulsar as your first car with them. I am 24 with a clean driving record that might be way it is pretty low.
If you don't mind, could you give me the number of that State Farm agent, and what did you have to tell them? Did you let them know its rhd, and did you need an appraisal?
yeah, the number's 705-746-9495. that's their parry sound office. try just a normal broker, and go with what bland said. just tell them it's imported from japan, don't mention anything about it being RHD unless they ask. i got a quote from another company for $200/month full coverage that way. keep in mind i'm also 25 with 3 minor convictions.
i got Monnex , they had no problem with JDM, were easy to deal with over the phone and fax. Just need a vehicle inspection and the standard stuff and it was done.
I get a real low rate from being 'grey' but a few tickets changed that.
I was shocked to learn one of the young guy's i worked with paid 6K per year in insurance![from dwi + etc]
Noticed anything "funny" with the exchange rates and parts prices lately:

Try Co-operators, was told they do RHD(have a friend who works there-trying to get me to switch but I get too good a deal through my broker) P.S. If there is no book value you require an appraisal... hence you will not be able to hide the fact that it is a right drive... you can get away with it if there is the same model for North America ie: Supra,MR2,Civic because they have a value and do not require an appraisal. They never questioned my rhd MR2. But they all knew right away once I gave them Pulsar Gti-r as a model.(no it's not fwd sir, lol)
re: groups didn't realize it but ...
Ya, they asked me and i had some unions and staff associations that qualified and i still had some but didn't realize it was a qualification.
I had bad luck with co-operators who wanted to renegotiate my gtir's rate when i brought in the second jdm car. Not. I'd paid them for a few decades and they got pissy over the RHD gtir rate they gave intitially. I stood firm, by rights, then they immediately decided to ditch me on house insurance by requiring a 5k sump to be installed in a flood area they wouldn't cover anyways for flood damage. Every one is individually owned so your results may vary as i understand it. Also way back they dropped my farm when it wasn't economical for them after 9-11. So you take your chances with them.
As for state farm, they refused a canadian serviceman coverage based on his income when he was a corporal and then gave him an invitation to join when he was promoted to sergeant. He would never go to state farm he said after that.

I keep my jdm insurance seperate to all my other cars and house insurance, still get a great deal and never have to worry about it affecting anything else. Just showed them proof I have other vehicles insured and am still able to insure it as a part time vehicle.I was forced into that route as when I got rid of the MR2, they did not know it was rhd, but the Pulsar they did from the appraisal. They would not insure it. My insurance was awesome so I just insured it elsewhere. I am not using co-op's currently, did about ten years ago, never had any issues. But I have a half dozen friends who deal with them as we are all old high school friends with an agent there. My friend was looking into a Delica or Patrol and he said they would insure them.Appraisal required i'm sure.
La Capital will not insure my R... instead they do my 240sx (stock) and my 87 sentra w/avenir engine... really messed up lol .. im contacting a broker around here this week to get it wo/collision ...
insurance in ontario is completely screwed- im 27 had 2 minors and an accident, one company quoted me 300 per month but only quoted me 200 for a wrx sti...? work that one out lol anyways my suggestion is to get an appraisal then the insurance company have to insure based on that and not what they think the car is worth. if you do speak to a company and they tell you that they dont insure rhd theyre full o shite, theres nothing that states they cant insure it and its actually been proven that rhd jdm cars are safer in some aspects.
my suggestion is as above, appraisal and shop around

Looks like my insurance just dropped to $190/month. That includes some extra life insurance so would probably be $180/month for just the Pulsar. I can handle that.
BTW I am with State Farm.
I pay 900$ per year for full insurance (Two side, fire, rob, scratch, everything) I'm with BelAir Direct in Québec. But I think they put my insurance like for a NX Pulsar. Not sure..
My insurance is 1400 for the year. The first year i licenced it it was 1700.
I am with State Farm. They will only insure RHD if you have been with them for 6+ months. I pay $250/month >:-(
But worth it.

I went through a broker, got Dominion of Canada. Had to get vehicle appraised. 115$ a month w/col.
So many unsuspecting victims... So little time.
I got a quote from state farm yesterday, the told me $420 a month...
Nissan Motorsports = Nismo
Honda Motorsprts = Homo
