I've been speaking with Frank at Modena for some time about the possibility of getting a custom centre diff done up for our cars. I was able to get an OZ member, Alex 82, to send Modena a factory centre diff so they had something to work from. Thank you to Alex for that.
My conversations with Frank have been around finding the right setup to satisfy the GTiR community. I asked him several questions about different types of differentials that I though would work, and have received the answer that to make this worthwhile, a clutch type/mechanical/ramp and plate etc etc is the best setup for us. I asked about torsion, Modena is a very experienced company, and Frank explained that in their testing of a Modena torsion centre in an awd setup the car was loose and slow.
On the other hand, the clutch type allowed for a point and drive feel, and resulted in amazing grip on the track.
As well keeping the torque split at 50/50 seems the best option as well. Those that know, are aware that everything is a compromise. Modifying the torque split might achieve a better lap time on the track in a purpose built car, but for other drivers will be tail happy, and hard to control aka not ideal for street driving. Some members also drive in snow or on gravel, where a 50/50 split is ideal. In the end sticking with Nissan's original split makes sense.
Currently Modena is very busy, so it might be some time before we hear back but I want to know thoughts and opinions and interest.
Only after people speak up for what they want can Frank determine what kind of ramp angles, preload, etc that will suit our needs. It was my thinking that the majority of owners will want a unit that will perform at the track, but still be street friendly. You know, allowing tight radius turns to park etc. without making (too) much noise ;).
Updates will follow as I get them.
Im all for it. I agree with your comment of "will perform at the track, but still be street friendly." I personally would want it for track use but would still like it to be " tolerable" on the street. but my cars also so loud it can wake the dead lol
Exactly. I dd my car, and can live with a lot of unpleasant race mods (solid mounts, coilovers, 6 puck clutch, uber lightweight flywheel, race brakes) but I don't want to make the thing undriveable by introducing so much drivetrain windup that the thing is bucking and knocking every time it turn left or right.
I am in.already have a modena front lsd and cusco rear so center diff is a must.
Perfect. I'm assuming you want the most aggressive diff possible lol. Response has been fast here and in OZ. I still don't have posting privileges on either UK board.
How about a selectable center diff? I want to drift.
I've tried it on hot, dry pavement and it doesn't work. I've tried it on gravel and I can 'flick' the back end out if I have a little bit of speed (you can do it with a FWD car). I WANT TO DO A DOUGHNUT!
GTi-R, the best ugliest car I've EVER seen/driven. You can make it cool, you can make it fast but you CAN'T make it look pretty.
Get a 2 way nismo rear. Locks the rear end hard. With a modena front diff you will also have more grip in the front and should be able to do axis spins in the dry with enough power.
I would be very interested but dependent on cost of course.
The best track setup possible but be my main goal.

Aggressive for me!
The best thing would be to copy the nismo one.
Know a guy in nz that owns one but don't know if he is keen on having it copied...
Hey, i only saw this thread now...
Lynx.... Like i discussed with you... Count me in 100 percent.... 'Perform at track, but will still be street friendly' sounds good to me.... I will also be taking my car to the 400m drags every now and then.
Thanks once again for the Nismo Rear Lsd!!
Did Modena give you an idea to when they might start the centres? Few weeks... couple months?
It will be a bit of time. No idea what the ETA is. They are very busy and they have to to a full R&D and production before we would have them. We have time to save our pennies.
Okay... so long as they dont forget they still have my factory centre which they asked for.. Keep up the great work... keep pushing them when you can..
Thanks again
Yep will make sure I let them know we are interested and waiting. Unfortunately I don't think we can compete with the v8 racecar crowd over there at the moment.
any chance i can get the front diff w/ the centre diff since i missed the first gb?
I'll ask frank if they have any left. If they do I'll let you know if they are willing to hold it until this group buy completes and you can get it shipped at the same time. They may require payment or a deposit now, so that they are certain you are serious.
There is one left, if you want it you have to buy it now. PM me if you want payment information. I need your name address, phone number.
We are still several months from a group buy on these. Modena is swamped right now.
Do you have any way for me to converse with you actively? ie: facebook or msn etc?
I need to ask you about the front diff extensively but I do not want to ask on the public forum.
Thanks
I'll pm you.
Hey... Any updates with the centre diffs
No modena is very busy ATM. I'll fire frank an email and see where we are at.
What's the word on this? Any updates?
Frank just got back to me, they are interested in making a run of centre diffs, but are in a super busy season right now. I'm trying to get a price estimate from him so I can see how many people are seriously interested.

This should be cool. It seems the center diffs are the hardest of the three to find. The guys that bought the Nismos are probably never letting them go, lol.
would this also be 'torsen'?
No, talked to Frank at Modena at length about the merits of each type of diff. Hands down the plated diff has been the best for them in a centre application. Tarmac is where most of their testing is done, and on Gravel/Snow plated would outstrip a torsen by FAR.
I'd be interested if there was a group buy of the Modena centre diffs, I can be found on the gtiroc but browse this forum from time to time
Ok I'll keep you in mind. Modena is also thinking about making more front diffs.
Are they thinking of making more front diffs in general or as a group buy.
I 100% want the front and centre diffs.
I would be in for both diffs as well
it would be a group buy with a minimum target. Modena is in very high demand.
What kind of numbers needed?
I'm sure you could get a few numbers on gtiroc
What exactly is being gained by this center lsd ? and if the torque split is is staying exactly the same ? I can under stand if they were building units so we could run like a 20/80 split for more of the rear wheel drive feel but replacing the center unit seems unnecessary

Viscous diffs suck. a 20/80 f/r split wouldn't be ideal for most. 50/50 is the best for all around traction. if you want a tarmac track car with a rear bias buy a miata. :-P
Lmao both my best friends race miatas , trust me I dont want one :P

I'd be in for front and centre.
Im interested!!!!!! Definitely need a centre.
Is there a deposit that needs to be taken to be in this ? I live in Australia and needing front and centre.
me too i need front and centre..
kmdr.robot
looks like a lot of interest! They are not gearing up until the new year I'll keep everyone advised.
double post
I am in too
I'm definitely in for the center diff, maybe the front depending on price.
Any word on this ?
Here is the latest:
"Hi Steve
Yes I did sorry for the late reply it’s just out of control will let you know as soon as my nightmare is over.
Regards
Frank."
They are swamped right now, he is super interested in doing them and we have talked at length about the design but they are just too busy ATM. Wish I had better news, but it's just a waiting game.
Lynx,
Count me in for a centre diff as well.
Regards,
Daniel
Ok sounds good.
I havent even got to drive my Pulsar, but I might be interested... Just depends on the price..
